Stranded Koala

It seems I've hit a stream of bad luck in the past 24 hours. It all started when I went to take a shower last night, and when I got out found that my bedroom door had locked behind me. I was lucky enough to have my clothes with me, so I wasn't wandering around in a towel (that would have been unfortunate!), but I did not have shoes, or a coat. So I borrowed some shoes and a coat and walked across to the dorm across the street to see if the person on duty could unlock my door. When I got there, I borrowed my flatmate's phone and called the number listed in the front hall, and the woman informed me that I had to call the off-hours university number. I called the second number, left a message as instructed, and walked home to wait for someone to show up with a key. After sitting in the kitchen for 2 1/2 hours, I finally decided it was time for bed, as it was already past 1am. One of my flatmates lent me a sleeping bag and a few pillows, and I literally camped out for the night in front of my door (see the picture above). My little nook of a hallway is actually nicely insulated, so it was, in fact, quite warm enough, and I got a full seven hours sleep. In the morning, I went back across the street, got a master key to open my door, and was finally able to get my life together again.

Of course, when I got to the office, my internet has this tricky thing where the wireless resets every week. I've been meaning to go see IT about it, but just haven't gotten around to it... Anyways, it took me about a half hour before I got everything up and running properly. Now when the wireless resets at work, I have to reset the ethernet settings for home when I bring my laptop back with me at the end of the day, so that was another pain. One of these days I'll get it sorted...

However, to really top it off, my iPhone stopped working this afternoon. Basically, while I'm at the office sometimes there's no service, but generally when I go outside again it will catch a signal eventually. But this time it didnt. So I turned off the phone and tried to turn it back on (because that usually helps it reset), but instead of just turning on like it's supposed to, it came up with a screen that said I needed to plug it into iTunes and wouldn't give any other options. So when I got home, after spending ages getting my internet working again, I plugged my phone in and iTunes told me my phone was in 'recovery mode' and that it needed to be restored and updated in order to work again. Seeing no other option, I did what the computer told me. Stupid. This re-locked my phone so that my UK sim card no longer works (because I had had my friend unlock my phone when I got here a few weeks ago). Great. So I messaged my friend to see if he could try to fix it for me, and of course he's out of town for the next two days. And I'm just worried that this can't be fixed. So for the next two days I'm going to be anxiously awaiting bad news that I've now got a phone that will not work and a phone plan for the next 11 months that is useless but I still have to pay anyway...on top of which I would have to get a new phone...I think I've really hit the glass half empty glitch. Best case scenario, though, I will have a working iPhone in two days time. Unfortunately, there are a few people who's numbers I have lost and who are not on facebook (gasp!) so now they're going to think I'm ignoring them and once I actually get my phone working I won't have their number anymore to tell them that I was not in fact ignoring them but that I'm just the unluckiest person with technology...
